A short guide to common responses and signals that need medical attention.

Responses that can be normal

After massage you may feel relaxed, sleepy, freer in movement or mildly tender in the areas worked. The response depends on intensity, recent load, sleep and general condition, and does not have to be the same after every visit.

What to do during the first day

Drink according to thirst, eat normally and do not test the result with an extreme workout. A calm walk and familiar movement are often better than complete rest. Follow any individual advice and your own response.

Symptoms not to dismiss as normal

Strong or increasing pain, marked swelling, weakness, numbness, breathing difficulty, fever or a sudden decline in wellbeing are not normal goals of massage. Contact the practitioner and seek medical care when appropriate.
